Escape winter to Tenerife! Discover attractions, beaches, and volcanic landscapes. See why the island is worth visiting in winter!
Winter in Poland can be beautiful… for the first two days. Then, the search begins for answers: where to escape the snow and frost before we forget what the sun looks like? If you dream of clear skies, volcanic landscapes, and coffee tossed out for an emergency, Tenerife in winter is a destination that truly makes sense. It's the perfect way to enjoy spring temperatures, the ocean, and sightseeing.
Why choose Tenerife in winter?
If you're wondering if a winter vacation in Tenerife is a good idea, the answer is a resounding yes. This is a winter destination that allows you to swap the short, gray days for sunshine, blue skies, and temperatures reminiscent of a Polish spring, or even summer (if you're lucky). Instead of shoveling snow from your car, you can stroll along the ocean, conquer volcanic peaks, or sip your morning coffee on the terrace. Tenerife offers a huge variety—from beaches and cliffs to the lunar landscapes of Teide National Park and the lush green mountains. Winter is a comfortable experience: without the scorching heat of summer and without the heaviest holiday crowds. It's a great option for both an active trip with trekking around the island and a peaceful retreat. If you dream of sunshine when it's freezing in Poland, Tenerife is sure to be your destination.
Tenerife winter weather – temperatures, wind and sun
One of the most common questions before a trip is: what's the weather like in Tenerife in January, and is it actually warm? In my experience, it varies, but it's usually very pleasant. The weather in Tenerife in winter can be surprising: we've had days with temperatures of 24-26°C, and in full sun it felt even hotter. You can wear short sleeves and truly feel the summer in the middle of winter. However, there are days closer to 20°C, more cloudy and windy. This is still a good temperature for sightseeing, but not necessarily for sunbathing. There's no 100% guarantee of weather here—it's not the tropics—but the chance of sunshine is really good. As for the ocean, I find it far too cold in winter, although the sight of tourists bathing shows that many people feel differently.
Where is the best place to stay in winter? South or north of Tenerife?
The question "south or north of Tenerife in winter" comes up every time I plan a trip. The south tempts with more sunny days and more stable weather, but I definitely prefer the north. It's greener and more authentic. In my opinion, Puerto de la Cruz is a great base – an atmospheric town with a black sand beach, a promenade, and views of Mount Teide. Here, you can experience the local rhythm of the island while still being close to the mountains and the ocean.
Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos – the warmest choice
The south of the island is often considered the best choice for winter – and it's no wonder. It's here that it's often the warmest and sunniest. Resorts like Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos attract those who dream of guaranteed weather and a typical vacation atmosphere.
If you choose this option, however, you need to be prepared for a very touristy environment. Souvenir stalls, loud bars, a lot of noise, and an international crowd – the island's true local charm can be harder to capture here. I generally avoid these areas unless worse weather chases me away from the north.
However, the south has one thing to say: wide, sandy beaches with a gentle slope into the water. For those focused primarily on sunbathing and relaxing by the ocean, this can be a real plus.
Puerto de la Cruz – greener, but cooler
As I mentioned earlier, Puerto de la Cruz is my best choice in winter, too. Perhaps I was lucky, but twice I experienced great weather here – almost as warm as in the south, even when the forecast before my trip predicted a veritable Armageddon.
It's a large city, also touristy, but it has managed to retain an aura of authenticity. There's significantly more greenery, which is impressive in contrast to the winter grayness of Europe. There are also plenty of good restaurants, atmospheric cafes, and places where you can experience the local rhythm of the island. The black sand beaches are also very pleasant to lie on – they have their own unique charm and allow you to enjoy the ocean in a completely different atmosphere than the popular, touristy beaches of the south.
The city has a lot to offer – from charming streets and squares, beautiful botanical gardens, to numerous viewpoints. You'll find the best attractions in our Puerto de la Cruz 1-day itinerary, which will allow you to see everything you need to know at a comfortable pace.

What to do in Tenerife in winter? Top attractions
Tenerife offers a huge variety of attractions in winter, for both beach lovers and those looking for an active holiday. The most prominent attraction is, of course, Mount Teide – a volcano that can be blanketed in snow in winter, and its lunar landscapes are truly impressive. The monumental Los Gigantes, where towering cliffs rise straight from the ocean, creating spectacular views, is also worth a visit. Charming towns such as Garachico and La Orotava are also worth a stop.

Trekking enthusiasts shouldn't miss Masca and the northeastern Anaga Mountains – the trails offer beautiful views of the ocean, laurel forests, and unspoiled beaches. If you're planning an active holiday, it's worth splitting your stay – spending part of your stay in Puerto de la Cruz, for example, and a few nights in the Taganana area. This is one of the most beautiful places on the island, full of trails and picturesque viewpoints. Driving there several times from afar can make the trip unpleasant, so staying overnight in this area provides comfort and allows you to fully enjoy the attractions of north-eastern Tenerife.

Tenerife in winter – who is it a good destination for?
If you're wondering whether it's worth visiting Tenerife in winter, the answer depends on your expectations, but in my opinion, the island has a lot to offer. It's the perfect place for those escaping the cold and snow – you can enjoy the sun, pleasant temperatures, and the ocean as a backdrop, even in the dead of winter. Tenerife in January/February/December is also perfect for active people – trekking on Anaga, Masca, or Teide is comfortable, as there are no summer heat or crowds. This is a destination for families seeking mild beaches and a peaceful climate, but also for couples and solo travelers who want to combine relaxation with exploring the island. In winter, the island reveals its true character – green valleys, volcanic landscapes, and local towns – while also providing plenty of sun and relaxation.
