Picking the right base will save you time on the road and allow you to see much more during your trip.
What Should You Consider Before Booking Accommodation?
Length of Your Stay
If you're visiting Puglia for just 3–4 days, it's usually best to stay in one place. Packing your luggage and changing hotels every couple of days often takes more time than you expect. If you're staying for a week or longer, however, splitting your trip between two locations—such as northern and southern Puglia—can be a great idea.
Car or Public Transport?
This is one of the most important factors. If you're renting a car, you'll have almost unlimited freedom to explore smaller towns and hidden gems. However, if you're looking for where to stay in Puglia without a car, choose towns with excellent train connections, such as Bari, Monopoli, or Lecce.
Beaches or Sightseeing?
Dreaming of walking to the beach every morning? In that case, staying in one of Puglia's coastal towns is the better option. If your goal is to visit as many beautiful towns and attractions as possible, a more centrally located base will make your itinerary much easier.
Traveling with Children

Advantages of Staying in Bari
Bari's biggest advantage is convenience. The city is home to Puglia's international airport, so after landing you won't need to rent a car immediately or arrange complicated transportation. This is one of the main reasons why so many travelers choose Bari as a base—you can start exploring the region from day one.
Another major benefit is the excellent railway network. From Bari Centrale station, you can easily reach many of Puglia's most popular destinations, making the city an excellent option for anyone planning to explore Puglia without a car.
Bari is also an ideal starting point for day trips. You can spend the day exploring one of the region's beautiful towns and comfortably return to the same hotel in the evening.
From Bari, you can easily reach:
- Polignano a Mare – about 30–40 minutes by train
- Monopoli – around 40 minutes by train
- Alberobello – by bus or train with one transfer

Disadvantages of Staying in Bari
Although Bari has many advantages, it isn't a typical seaside resort. If you're dreaming of peaceful promenades and a small holiday town, you may find the city a little too urban.
It's also worth remembering that while Bari sits on the Adriatic coast, its beaches are located outside the historic city center. If spending every day on the beach is your priority, a smaller coastal town may be a better fit.
Who Is Bari the Best Base For?
I recommend Bari primarily to first-time visitors who want to see as much of Puglia as possible in a short amount of time. It's also an excellent choice for travelers without a car and for anyone who enjoys ending the day with dinner at a local restaurant or an evening stroll through lively historic streets.
Monopoli or Polignano a Mare – which is the better base?
This is one of the most common questions people ask when planning a trip to Puglia. The two towns are only a few kilometers apart, and although they may seem similar at first glance, they offer completely different experiences.
Monopoli – Advantages
If you're looking for a place that combines beautiful beaches with easy sightseeing, Monopoli is an excellent choice. This charming seaside town has a picturesque historic center while being quieter and less crowded than its famous neighbor.
Another major advantage is the wider range of accommodation, from apartments to boutique guesthouses. This makes it easier to find good-value places to stay, especially if you book in advance.
Monopoli also has the upper hand when it comes to beaches. Both the town and its surroundings offer several small coves and sandy beaches that you can easily reach on foot from the historic center.
Polignano a Mare – Advantages
Polignano a Mare is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and photogenic towns in Puglia. Its whitewashed houses perched on dramatic limestone cliffs and the famous Lama Monachile beach make it a dream destination for many travelers. It's an excellent choice for a romantic getaway. Evening strolls through its narrow streets, restaurants overlooking the sea, and its unique atmosphere make it easy to fall in love with this beautiful town.
However, popularity comes at a price. During the summer season, Polignano a Mare is significantly more crowded, and accommodation is generally more expensive than in Monopoli. It's also a very tourist-oriented destination, and during the day you'll often hear loud music coming from restaurants and bars, which slightly takes away from its authentic charm.
Monopoli or Polignano a Mare – which should you choose?
If you're looking for a quieter holiday, a wider selection of accommodation, easier beach access, and a more authentic local atmosphere, Monopoli is the better base in Puglia. It's a fantastic option for families as well as travelers who plan to spend their days exploring the region.
I would recommend Polignano a Mare mainly for couples and travelers who want to spend a few days in one of Italy's most picturesque towns and don't mind the larger crowds.
Where to stay in Puglia without a car?
If you're planning to explore Puglia without a car, the answer is quite simple—Bari. The city is home to the region's largest railway station, providing easy access to most of Puglia's top attractions.
From Bari, you can reach Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Trani, and Giovinazzo by train in less than an hour. Lecce takes a little longer, while Matera is also easily accessible by train or bus. This means you won't have to change hotels every day or worry about renting a car. Another major advantage is Bari's proximity to the international airport.
If you don't enjoy staying in larger cities, Monopoli is an excellent alternative. The town is also located on the main railway line and offers convenient connections to many of the region's highlights. However, the transport network isn't quite as extensive as Bari's, so some day trips may take a little longer.
One base or split your stay?
In my opinion, if you're deciding where to stay in Puglia for your first visit, there's no need to overcomplicate your itinerary. For a shorter trip, one well-chosen base is more than enough. Personally, Bari was my favorite—it felt like the most authentic city of all those mentioned here. In the evening, the historic center takes on a completely different atmosphere, and wandering through its narrow streets is an experience you shouldn't miss. I also recommend spending at least one full day exploring Bari itself. Besides its charming old town, you'll find several impressive landmarks and some excellent restaurants. If you're staying for a week or longer, it's worth considering splitting your accommodation. A great option is to spend your first three nights in Bari. During that time, you can explore the city, take day trips to Alberobello and Locorotondo, and visit Matera. If possible, I highly recommend spending one night there. Although Matera is located in the neighboring region of Basilicata rather than Puglia, it reveals its true magic after sunset. Once the day-trippers leave, the stone streets become quiet, and the ancient Sassi district is beautifully illuminated, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
For the second part of your trip, I recommend moving to Monopoli. It's an excellent base for exploring central Puglia while also offering a more relaxed holiday atmosphere. From here, you can easily visit Polignano a Mare and Ostuni, and after a day of sightseeing, you'll have beautiful beaches, a scenic seafront promenade, and a peaceful ambiance that's hard to find in larger cities.
